Strengthening Tasmania’s Democracy

In these days of diminishing democratic governments throughout the world, it is vital to protect and strengthen our democracy. The Washington Post newspaper’s motto is ‘Democracy Dies in Darkness’. The TCS’s goal is to keep the light on Tasmania’s democracy to ensure accountability and transparency.

The Tasmanian Constitution Society was formed in March, 2010, with the primary objective of promoting good governance by recommending reforms to that end and to restore the House of Assembly to 35 seats. Now restoration has been achieved, the TCS’s goals are to:

  1. Promote good governance by identifying, recommending,
    and publicising reforms.
  2. Support actions that increase transparency and accountability
    of our elected representatives.
  3. Invigorate the study of good governance by holding public
    forums on important issues.
  4. Publish papers which inform and support the learning
    of members and elected representatives.

Join us and help keep the light on Tasmania’s democracy shining bright.

One of the Tasmanian Constitution Society’s founders was Associate Professor Peter Chapman who was president from 2010 to April 2023. He worked tirelessly for the restoration of Tasmania’s House of Assembly to 35 seats which was approved by the Governor in December 2022. Associate Professor Chapman died in May 2023 and in August the Member of the Legislative Council for Hobart, Rob Valentine, paid tribute to him in the chamber.
